How to Measure

Neck / Collar

Measure around the base of the neck where the collar sits.

Chest

Measure the total circumference of your chest at its fullest point, just under your armpit.

Waist

Place your hands on your hips and bend to the side.  The indent on your side as you bend is your natural waist. Measure the total circumference at this point.

Waist - Jeans

Measure your circumference at a point about two inches (5cm) below the belly button.

Hip

Stand with your feet 6” (15cm) apart.  Measure the total circumference at the fullest point of your hip.

Sleeve Length

With your elbow slightly bent, starting at your middle neck bone, measure to the point of your shoulder and down to your wrist bone.  Or take a shirt that fits well and take the same measurement.

Inseam

Stand with your feet 6” (15cm) apart.  Measure from the top of the leg/crotch to below the ankle.  Or take a pair of pants that fit well and take the same measurement.

Foot Length

Step 1: Tape a piece of paper to the floor, stand on this making sure you are stood on the hard, flat surface. Push your heel up against the wall.

Step 2: Get someone to draw around the forepart of your foot with a pen or pencil. Repeat for both feet as they could measure differently.

Step 3: Measure the length of the heel to toe measurement for both feet. Compare the measurement to the size chart.

Foot Width

Step 1: Stand up straight and distribute your weight evenly on your feet.

Step 2: Wrap a measuring tape around the widest part of your foot - for most people this will be the joint, which is located just before your toes.

Step 3: Make sure the tape is not slack but not too tight. Then read off your measurement and compare it on the size chart.

There two types of sizing for dress shirts:

1. Numeric sizing, based on neck (and arm/sleeve length).

For example, a label showing two numbers: 14 ½  followed by 36/37, means that this dress shirt fits someone with neck size 14 ½ inches and chest size 36-37 inches.

2. Alpha sizing (XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL, XXXL, etc), mostly based on chest dimensions of the person.

You can use your body measurements and the charts below to find your generic dress shirt size.  Keep in mind, since sizes vary widely across brands, regions (US, Europe, Asia, etc), and styles (traditional/class fit, modern fit, slim fit, extra/super slim fit, etc), it's always a good idea to check against brand specific size charts and find your best fit.

How to measure without a ruler or tape measure?

If you don't have a ruler or tape measure handy, you can try to measure with a standard credit card, which has a width of 3 ⅜ inch or 8.56 cm and a height of 2 ⅛ inch or 5.4 cm.
